Sudharak: >>"So that occasionaly they can use that language whereever appropriate. (e.g talking with old close relatives like grand parents and also with people on the street like vegetable vendors and bus conductors.) When they do it that way, they will not attract such a silly cry from such fanatics." Are you any less a fanatic when it comes to defending English? Its just the way you look at things. Others do not have to look at it the same way. And you never replied to BHM about your logic being circular. Or did I miss the posting? Anyway..Ya Marathi mule mala Acharya Atre, C. V. Joshi, Pu La, Va Pu, Khandekar, Go. Ni. Da, etc he milale. Tyache upkaar kase re fedu? Marathi sodli asti tar he sagle gele aste. Tya ulat English che koni author miss nahi zale re...Agdi Dickens, Hardy, pasun John Grisham, J. K. Rowling(Harry Potter fame) paryanta sagle milale. So in the final bargain I finish a lot richer than the person who does not know Marathi. I have the best of both worlds. Only regret is I dont know more languages. arre ajun hi "Nach re Mora" mala jasti avadte.."Aata tuzi pali meech dete Tali" yachat kiti gammat aahe te bagh jara...kar bara he english madhye translate. Before you get me wrong, I will never ask anyone to translate Wordsworth's Daffodils " My heart with pleasure fills and dances with the daffodils" into Marathi. Each is right in his own place. My point is: The role of a language, any language, is to convey ideas. So a language by itself does not make a person intelligent. It is just a medium that allows that intelligence to be manifest. So why bother about the form, look at the core. BTW the form itself isnt bad to look at either. ;-) Each language has its own beauty. My concern as a "Rasik"/conossieur is to grasp the beauty of the thing. Mala G. B. Shaw cha Pygmalion solid avadta. Mhanun Pu La ncha "Ti Phoolarani" la me kami lekhat nahi. Both authors were equally brilliant. Intelligence he kuthlya race chi "Jagir" aahe ka? Baki, zakki, as usual tumchi varchi postings sahi aahet. BHM: Neatly written. aaj barech divsaani lihila. Bara vat-tay jara !!! :-0

V_sameer, chhan ahe tumca post! I agree, mi svataha kadhi Marathi shikle nahi, ani fakt kathakathan chya cassttes var PuLa, VaPu etc goshti aiklya, natka Prism chya video cassettes var pahili... Vactana bot laun laun vacayla lagta.. I doubt I will ever be able to read Sriman Yogi/ Garambi ca Bapu. Hya ulat, English madhe BA miLvun sudha, (ani english ca khoop prem asun sudha), no English author can make me cry the way a Marathi author can. Kitti kavita vaclya pun Shakespeare pasun Shelley paryant kuthehi sadhya powadyatli maja aali nahi! I am only beginning to re-discover Marathi and I thank my stars for it.. Mumbait 'RaNaNgaN' (natak) pahila hota.. ardhe dialogs dokya varun gele... but it was a fantastic experience. Tutka tutka jari mala Marathi bolta aala tari it is far more precious to me than fadfad English bolna.. Ani bhasha hi human subconscious madhe rahte. My childhood memories do not include faltufanda Mother Goose rhymes.. rather, I remember all those lovely Shivaji+MaLwe gaani. English kay paachvi pasun shikta yeta, ani motha zalyavar pick up pan karta yeta. Pun matrubhasha madhe lahanpanapasun shikla nahi ki na dhad ikadce, na dhad tikadce

You are right. Languages serve one purpose or other. Now that you have found that your mother tongue 'caters' to a purpose, you are eager to learn it and use it. This is an appropriate attitude. I too understand and can speak these vernacular languages well. However I make it a point not to use them without purpose. For example, there are a couple of friends of mine, who are sort of what I call 'language love fanatics'. Whenever I happen to see them in street or in marketplace, I am particular to start and end the dialogue in vernacular saying "How do you do?" and "see you."(both in vernacular) The entire dialogue in between is in English. This has its advantages. These 'language lovers' get a satisfaction that an English talking person like me is speaking their language. This way one can have best of both the worlds.

The way I see it is: U have a hierarchy in ur mind. English is at the top and Vernacular languages are down the line. I disagree. You CANNOT have a "Rank" on a language that is solely decided by a head count of the ppl who use it. If we hold such a view and relegate vernacular languages to a lower status we are the ones who stand to lose. Along with a language a whole body of thought would be gradually lost. It has happened before. Welsh is an example. The language is gone..almost.. Do you really think that just by beginning a conversation in marathi, having a dialogue in english and then closing with a farewell in marathi you are satisfying "Language Lovers"?? Do you think people are so naieve? Are u seriously suggesting that this marathi-english-marathi strucutre gives you the best of both worlds!

Sameer, Sudharak - Nice posting! I believe that if u know more languages, it will help u to know world in a better way. After all u need some tools for communicating with the world around u. If the guy is staying in America then its all time better for him if he is well versed with English language than Marathi (or whatever his mother tongue is.) Looking at the present age, English is more prioritized because its accepted as a international language. But this does not mean that u one should give up his mother tongue. Most of the people claims that they can express themselves more better in their mother tounge than any other language. But personally I feel, knowing english language is a need for today's age. When I finished my graduation & start searching out for a job, I was performing very poor in interview & one of the most severe reason for it was my miserable english. That time I was blaming my fate as to why my parents couldn't put me put in english medium school. But later my views changed, I met many people in Pune n Mumbai, who did thier high-school education in Marathi medium & still they were fluent at English. The reason is surrounding! In India, only in Metro's, people communicate in English. So, even if the guy in admitted English medimum school & if his surrounding is not english then still he will face problems when he wants to communicate in English. When I shifted my job from Pune to Mumbai, I got more better surrounding for improving english. And now I really don't face that much problem like what I used to face during my college passed-out days! There are some more reasons, like in small city, people feel its over-smartness if u r communicating in English when there is absolutely no need to speak in English. But one thing is true, one can pick up English language if he knows its basic & he has an aversion towards english stuff.

V_sameer, I believe Marathi and Tamil are considered the closest to Sanskrit. Pan Marathi chi lipi Devanagri ahe, Tamil chi nhave. Mhanun Marathi is a tad closer... I'm not sure but that whole issue about tamils wanting to speak tamil and NOT Hindi has its orgins in this so called superiority of Tamil (in their mind) coz of its closeness to Sanskrit.

navanava: I was not talking about the script. People must have been using the language even before the script was used. Maybe they used a diff script. I don't know. I am just shooting in the dark...:-)..Was it that "Gavaa kadchi Marathi" was Sanskritised and it evolved to "Puneri Marathi"? But who were our ancestors? Aryans, Dravidians, someone else?.That could give some idea. I am sure that there must be Bibles written on this topic. But Sadly I dont have al the time. So i put it on this BB..
