One funny experience I had in a bank in US. This was my first encounter with the English in US. The bank teller told me " print your name on the back of the check". I thought she is telling to print my name using a "printer". I asked her if its OK to "write my name". The lady insisted on "printing"! Then I came to know in US printing is writing

a couple of weeks ago - i was at dinner with a few colleagues from work. during the conversation, i happened to use the word "fortnight" - the guy across from me just stopped me right there and asked me the meaning of the word. i explained that it was refering to a period of "two weeks". turns out that he (and a very huge percentage of americans) do not know that word. this guy was not the average guy on the street... he was a phd and had served as a major in the air force.
other words that i have been questioned about include "trousers" (why dont we just say "pants") and "spectacles" (this almost NO ONE ever uses - its just plain "glasses")
we speak a language that is considered too "archaic" here in the US

Aditya, I have noticed what you have described. In my case, the word was "penultimate" (which means one before the last). All the American guys were surprised to hear this word and looked into MS Word thesaurus to verify it really was a word! Perhaps, we speak more of an "English" English while Americans use their own subset of it. I won't be surprised to see many more words that they have not heard of.

its interesting how vocabulary changes as you spend more time in the states:
petrol pump, signal and footpath get replaced by gas station, light/traffic light and sidewalk respectively. and now i find it hard to get myself to use the british (or is it indian ??) words
you start speaking a lot more english than you have spoken before, and as a result, as sto said, vocabulary definitely improves. and english generally improves too - particularly since the people you work with normally speak pretty good english.
one common mistake made by almost all indians,(atleast in the initial period of their stay in the US): WE SPEAK TOO FAST ... way too fast for the americans to figure out. the average american CANNOT cope with both the accent and the speed at the same time. when i took my "speak test" in grad school for qualification to "teach" a class - i was given one simple instruction - speak very slowly. the english language institute folks who come there are as bad as the average american when coping with both speed and accent at the same time.
and since then i have been making a very concious effort to speak slowly (particularly in presentations) - you wouldnt want the audience to grapple with your accent and speed - you would rather have them focus on the content of your talk
