Guys, I recently came across someone who mentioned Canola is bad for you it has toxins etc. I a skeptic forever decided to look up this and came across these sites among others. Anybody who can shed more light on this is welcome to do so. I am posting the sites here for reference.

shilpa, I will tend to agree with the sites that say that it is an urban legend (that canola oil is bad).

Much of the milk that we drink in the US is also in some sense genetically engineered.

I personally prefer olive oil above all other oils due to its higher content of unsaturated fats. Check with the doctor to be sure, but I believe it is good for everyone. Its certainly the best for those with a tendency leaning towards heart disease. The good thing about it is that its fat starts getting converted into trans-fat at a much higher temp than other oils.

sometimes you hear about one oil or another that it does not contain any cholesterol. The response to that should be: duh, no plant product, and hence no oil contains cholesterol. But I guess you knew that.

Ashish, that's what I thought, but I just wanted to be sure about this so I am welcoming other opinions too. I too agree that Olive oil is better for umpteen reasons, but to deem Canola as outright toxic or harmful is a stretch in my opinion. But if anybody knows anything else that we are missing please express your opinions.

I've done quite a lot reading on which oil is good for health and I found that there is a varied opinion on usage of canola oil. So I avoided purchasing it since there are other types of oil which are easy to chose.In general oil is not good for heart, whether its olive oil which is unsaturated or ghee which is highly saturated. But minimum usage is permitted for good health. There are three types of fat: saturated, polyunsaturated and mono-unsaturated (these terms describe the type of chemical bonding between the atoms). Each type consists of fatty acids, which are chains of carbon and hydrogen atoms, in varying combinations. Both polyunsaturated and mono-unsaturated fats can lower blood cholesterol levels. Olive oil is a mono-unsaturated fat. Other foods containing mostly mono-unsaturated fats include avocado, canola oil and peanuts. In Dr. Abhay Bang's book - maazaa saakshatkari hrudayrog, he has mentioned that mustard oil, sesame oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, soya bean oil are good for health. Our groundnut oil, cocount oil has got highter amount of saturated fats. Olive oil has unsaturated fats which in fact quite helful for the heart. Dr has mentioned that mixture of one table spoon of saraso oil, one table spoon of soyabean oil, one table spoon of sunflower oil is good way of using oils in cooking. So I aquired his method. I get all these oils in supermarker here so I am bit relaxed now that I will not get into high cholesterol problem. I found that olive oil burns very fast and is not good for our kind of fodaNee. But when I make parathaas which need more amount of oil, I prefer olive oil. Ghee .. I stay away from it. Even I advise my pregnant sister that after delivery do not eat ghee much as it is suggested by old exeperiened people. I think only growing kids should take ghee, loNee.

Here I am posting Dr Abhay Bang's email reply -
=======

Received your mail dated 10th August 2004.

Kindly note that Mustard Oil is Saraso Oil or Mohari (Rai) Oil. It is readily available in market. No oil is beneficial to heart. But it will be better to use a combination of Saraso Oil + Groundnut oil + Soyabean Oil, as it is less harmful to heart.

Thanks.
Abhay Bang.

Shilpa, I suggest u to read Dr. Abhay Bang's book or Dean Ornish’s ‘Reversing Heart Disease’. These books are very simple to understand and it alerts u on many things. I too read that Canola oil has got bad toxins in it. So I suggest u to stay away from it. I am bit curious to know why you want to use this oil? I mean, I've seen generally people are not aquainted with this oil much.

Ashish, perhaps u must be knowing this but still.. any oil when its heated it becomes bad for the heart. So, low heat for a less amt of time is preferable. "tel kaDhat wagaire muLeech karoo naye". I've seen in Italy that they pour olive oil once pasta is fully cooked. While our recipes first pour the oil and then cook it.

बी... एक शंका?
canola oil हे ज्या बियांपासुन काढतात, ( rape seeds) which is a member of the mustard family. आणि mustard seeds म्हणजे मोहोरी, मग how it can be safe to consume mustard oil?
