Your information is correct. It's better to have a fraud alert on your account if you suspect any kind of fraudulent activity with your credit.
But better you call the social security faudline, no. listed the on their website-
http://www.ssa.gov/oig/ifyou.htm
THe fraud alert makes sure that no credit company sends you pre-approved credit info by mail for an year(that is simply wonderful!), makes the credit company to identify you by using more no. of identifications while applying for a new credit card or so.
The SS fraudline tells you to notify 2 more credit report providers-
Aquifax & Experian. They give you the no.s for both. Experian gives you no. of Trans Union.
Let me add one more experience I heard from my boss. Someone had stolen pre-approved credit applications from his mail box & that some was able to get a card on his name. It was too late for the neightbour to notice the fraud.

Samirm75 : you can opt out of pre-approved credit card offers by calling 888-567-8688. This service is supported by all credit agencies.

Call 800-5-OPTOUT. They will send you a form where you have to give your details incl. SSN and specify whether you want to optout for 3 years or until you inform them. Once you send this information, it will be shared by ALL the credit agencies and your name will be excluded from the mailing list.
Also, you can verify this after a month or so by running a credit check yourself. It will say "This file is blocked for promotion".
I did this several years ago and I don't receive ANY pre-approved credit cards (except from companies with whom I do business).
To remove the name from phone mailing list, I called Public Utility Commision in TX who have this facility for opt-out. Better yet, get an unlisted phone number.
