asheetal, H4 baddal nahi pan mi L1 baddal aikla hota. I mean, L4 visa prakar asel tar tya visa varil vyaktila kaam karayla parvangi ahe.

Now L & E visa holder's dependents can get EAD (employment authorization card) & they can work anywhere. And this rule is already passed.
They are just hoping for H4 people also same rule should be passed, but yet nothing is done.

I believe you get L1 if it is inter-company transfer eg. if you r working for IBM India and through IBM India you r coming to US to work for IBM US then you get L1. In all other cases generally you get H1.
Your company has to apply for your H4 to H1 transfer, you just have to send some documents such as your passport, h4, i-94 copies, yr qualification proof etc to your employer. Your employer will give your list of required documents.
I don't know about H4 to L1 but should be same.

F1 status can be obtained ONLY if you are approved to get admission in a full time Graduate/Undergradyate Course work and the school provides you I-120 document. But you can choose to be on H4 and do degree courses as well. For all other course/certificate/exam work you dont need to change the status or rather you will not get I-120 from the school.

Thanks Yogibear. But on H4, I won't be able to do a campus job or can't become RA/TA etc. I was't aware that we can do cources in community college on H4. Thanks for info. But do they help?
& wanted to know what is 'EAD'

EAD = Employment Authorization Document used as work permit to work in USA. You obtain this during later stages of your GreenCard processing.
OPT = Optional practical training only available to student visa category not h4

Gauri, if you are planning to enroll in graduate program, I don't think community colleges offer any graduate level classes. they do have quite a few undergrad courses though. check with the community college near you. I'd also suggest you to check with the university where you intend to apply for further studies and get your **actual** degree as some universities create problems at the time of course transfer.

e.g.
1. You can take Certificate courses in finance/software/hr etc.
2. You can take generic hobby courses for your hobbies such as painting/stitiching/pottery/etc.
3. You can go for either Undergraduate/Graduate degree programs such as BS/MS/MBA which would be useful in obtaining a degree and evntually will be useful in getting a job.

Gaurijay: Check out public/community libraries, social organizations in your areas, schools (always require volunteers), Universities, Hospitals in your areas. Mostly you would find Ads on their bulletin boards but you can always ask at the reception.

I want to work in HR Dept as I have done my post grad in Human resources. & that exp. might help me to get a good job. I personally checked with some employment agencies but they don't require such volunteers.

Gauri: You can try volunteering to work as recruting person for various events organized by social/public organizations. You may also try to be in organizing committee for such events.....

For this conversion what is the procedure?
Is it too cumbersome/need to go to Mexico /canada etc?

You cannot go to any other country for getting a new visa stamped in your passport, as per revised laws you have to go to your home country.
Plz use only one BB to ask your Q rather than posting same Q on different BB's.
