Samirm75, I am not 100% sure pan bahutek tax nasto on J1. I am not 100% sure so please cross check.
Also J1 visa che rula mala watate ata badalale aahet ani once you get J1 it can not be extended again. What I have heard is that people convert J1 to H1 ultimately so in that case its better to get HI in first place.
I will say but please cross check this info on official site.

samir, here is some info about the 2 visas:
If a person comes here on J1, they do not have to pay federal tax for two years. However, if they stay for one day more, they have two pay it for all the earlier period too.
J1 is max for 3 years (with a 6-month extension for winding up). It can be renewed from within US (i.e. you do not have to go to canada/mexico for stamping). It can even be converted to H1 from within without needing a restamping. If you exit the country then of course you have to get it stamped.
Spouses of J1 i.e. J2 visa holders can work (while of course spouses of H1 can not work without getting their own H1).
For Indians on J1 there is generally a 2-year home country stay requirement meaning that once you are done with the term, you can not get another visa until you go back to India for 2 years. The way out is to get a letter from India that they do not need you. It takes 6-8 months (The philosophy is as follows: J1 is exchange visitors visa [not student! that is F1]. So it is assumed that India needs your services when your "training" or "visit" is done. So you go through a standard procedure to get out of it).
HOWEVER, the rules ARE somewhat different for people wanting to study medecine here (with regards to the time duration etc.) and you should check the specifics. The BCIS site has extensive info on all these topics. What I wrote above are the genaral issues and rules.
I have done all the above and so know these things firsthand. If you have any more questions, do email me (besides spelling them out here). I will get back and reply them here if they are going to be useful to all.

Thanks a lot for the info and your email Aschiq. But I am posting comments here as it will be useful to others in future.
One more Q Aschiq.
As you said if someone stays more than two years ( which she is going to stay ) then they have to pay taxes from the very beginning. If this is the case then it does not make any sense to come on J1 when we know that she is going to stay here more than that. but the question is, is it like if she continues on J1 for the third year she has to pay taxes and what if she gets converted to H1B before 2 years i.e. start the procedure after 1.5 years and get H1B by the end of the 2nd year, does she have to pay taxes from the begginning or just once the H1 starts?

samir, your comment is totally uncalled for! maayboli is not an immigration site. and, you are asking some very basic questions here (like the difference between H1 and J1). one could have easily checked out a couple of immigration sites before asking these questions. apparently, you didnt do so, on top of it, you are complaining how you are not getting any help and all. this is unfair and unwarranted, especially when your most messages on maayboli are help_me_please ones.
i dont need to tell u that immigration rules change all the time. so the veracity of the information that people post here in response to your question may not be guaranteed. it's always recommended to check out the facts yourself. besides, you are just a couple of clicks and google searches away from them. why be so lazy then?? one can always ask about other's experiences and comments, but it's better if he does his homework first.

whatever rules are there on site and people experiences are most of the times different and experience is more useful and helpful than documentation. Don't you think so? And this site is ment for everything. Not just for doing time pass .. and what's the harm if someone is asking for some information which one already knows? I am not asking you to findout something for me and paste it here. I had searched some of the web sites but could not really get all the information in needed in short time .. If you are not interested to help someone with your knowledge you should not just keep quite watch.. anyways I do not want to continue or discuss about this any more here. LEt's not change the intention of this BB.

Hello everyone,
I am new here but hoping to find information from some fellow Indians. I am in US on F1 visa but I need to change it to H4 in some time. After about 6 months I would be going back to F1. How easy or difficult do u think this is going to be? Has anyone been through a similar situation before? Will I have to go to India each time to get my Visa stamped?
Please help!!

मला J2 - VISA बद्दल माहिती हवी आहे. जर J1 आणि J2 एकच वेळी issue झाले असतिल तर दोघांनाहि एकच वेळी US मधे जाणे जरुरी आहे का? can J2 follow later.. if so how many days/months?
Once in US on J2 visa, can you leave US and stay outside for more than 6 months and return back -- do you have to get the visa stamped again?
